Create Your Own Blackout Poetry! Fun and Simple.
Blackout Poetry in the Making
Sometimes writing poetry can be a bit daunting. This is why this project is great for anyone. It’s simple and fun and can appeal to the quirky (like myself).
This is another project that requires minimal supplies; recycled written text, old newspapers, magazines or books, scissors, a black sharpie marker and a pencil.

- Simply snip out small blocks of text and look through the words for an inspiring combination to compose your poem or statement.
- Circle those words in pencil.
- Take your black sharpie marker and black out the rest of the words.
- Voila! You have a blackout poem!
As I mentioned in my previous post, it’s difficult to find projects that my son enjoys doing with me, but this one is a winner. He loves it. Here is a sample of his work below:
Once you’re finished you can frame them, give them away as gifts or incorporate them into your art journal.
