Are Blogs A Useful Form of Social Media in Distance Education?

Social media is a powerful tool in distance learning, enabling the learner to self-access and manage data and form personal networks. As with most everything, social media has its pros and cons. It can aid in the development of digital literacy, communication, e-portfolio for employment, student autonomy, and can expand perspectives. But on the other hand, structure can be needed to select content and recognize accreditation. (Bates, 2022) 

Blogs have been around for a few decades but their use in education is more recent, both in the classroom and distance education. The role of blogs in education is vast:

  • Student reflection journal archive
  • Student portfolio
  • Classroom portfolio
  • Social network
  • Collaboration platform
  • Learning communities
  • Instructor communication and announcement platform
